We had designated today as a walking day. We packed up the van and drove through Castleton and to a National Trust car park at Mam Tor Nick. Mam Tor is a hill (meaning Mother Hill) the site of an ancient Bronze Age settlement. We quickly climbed the hill and then started a ridge walk in a horseshoe shape. We were totally making it up as we had no map and my mobile phone was out of action and I couldn't check its mapping system.
Our preferred destination was going to be Kinder Scout. This was the hill that was part of the historic mass trespass in 1932 when hundreds of people trespassed up the hill to campaign for rights to public footpaths across private lands. Janice wanted a ramble but I just went on and on and on! We did manage to find our way onto the top of Kinder Scout and had our butties.
A Boy Scout on top of Kinder Scout. Sorry no woggle! No chocolate eggs either (I feel I have to spell out the connection to today's blog title as some of my readers are a bit slow on the uptake!).
We walked down to Edale village. This is the start point for the Pennine Way. There was still a long walk back. We did 12-13 miles in total.
Onward to Ashbourne in the southern Peak District. Pleasant enough place but not really exciting. We camped in the towns main car park behind the Co-op and Waitrose supermarkets. We really are living the high life. It was pretty good as there was an area of the car park that was quiet and away from the shops. There were no signs saying no overnight camping and 'here's the thing'.....there was a charge of £1 for evening and overnight parking. We gladly paid our pound and then parked across four spaces....not sure if that is allowed?
We had our tea and later went out on the town. Not the liveliest place I've ever been on a Saturday night. I am definitely a light-weight when it comes to drinking. I managed two and a half pints (couldn't finish the third pint) but I was very naughty and had a portion of chips on the way back to the van.
