We also called in at Lower Largo. I hear you saying...where the hell is that! and why is it being mentioned. Well, it was the home of Alexander Selkirk, whose real life story was used by Daniel Defoe as inspiration for the book 'Robinson Crusoe'. His story is really interesting. He was a buccaneer around 1702 and was at an island off the Chilean coast and he was so concerned about the seaworthiness of the ship he refused to sail and he was left on the uninhabited island by himself for almost 5 years before he was rescued. The photo below is his statue in his home village.
We arrived at our small site (without facilities!) and cycled 4 miles into St Andrews. We had a little walk around and saw the ruined Cathedral and Castle. Our visit is actually coinciding with a trip by Janice's daughter, Laura, and her fiancé Oliver and his family. We plan to see them on Wednesday.
St Andrews Cathedral which was the largest building in Scotland for 600 years until the building of Waverley train station in Edinburgh.
Of course we had a little peek it the St Andrews Golf course too. I am beginning to doubt Janice's claim to Scottishness even more because she doesn't seem to be able to identify all the Scottish tartans. She gets very sniffy when I say that they all look alike!
Back to the site and in the evening we called in at the local pub for a Folk night.
Doesn't it look a wild night. I am actually writing the blog in the pub. I think I will ask them to play the theme music for Captain Pugwash! The view across towards Leuchars airfield was superb. We are planning a bike ride tomorrow, weather dependant!
Testing!
